Suffragette Planners and Potters
Suffragette Planners and Plotters tells the story of Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, her husband Frederick, and their remarkable collaboration with Emmeline Pankhurst to make the ‘suffragettes’ of the Women’s Social and Political Union a powerful force for change. Neglected by biographers, the Pethick-Lawrences were as well known in the early 20th century as the Pankhursts, alongside whom they went to prison. Emmeline was modelled in wax at Mme Tussauds. But they have been neglected by historians.
This book contends that without the Pethick-Lawrences’ wealth, dedication and skills the Pankhursts’ Women’s Social and Political Union would never have made the impact that it did. It follows the lives of Fred and Emmeline from early childhood, examining what brought them to the militant campaign for the vote for women, through the six intense years of their collaboration with the Pankhursts, during which time they were recognised by all as joint leaders, to their bitter ousting from the movement in 1912, at the height of their fame and influence.
